History of Lipton Tea
In 1871 Thomas Lipton of Glasgow, Scotland used his small savings to open his shop. By the 1880s Lipton had grown to more than 200 shops. In 1929, the Lipton grocery retail business was one of the companies that merged with Home and Colonial Stores, Vyes & Boroughs, and many more to form a food group with more than 3,000 stores. The group traded in the street under various names but later it was registered on the UK stock market as Allied Suppliers. In the 1980s supermarket business was rebranded as Presto.

Thomas Lipton began traveling the world in search of new items to stock in his store. At that time sales had doubled and tea was quite expensive. He believed that the prices were too high, so in 1890 he purchased his tea gardens in Ceylon, now named Sri Lanka. Here he packaged and sold the first Lipton tea.
