The 7 Agro-Climatic Regions of Ceylon Tea
Unlike uniform mass-market teas, Pure Ceylon Tea offers a breathtaking diversity of flavors driven by Sri Lanka's unique microclimates, topography, and elevation zones. From misty alpine peaks to sun-drenched coastal plains, Sri Lanka is divided into seven official tea-growing regions.
1. Nuwara Eliya (High Grown: Above 2,000m / 6,200ft)
Known as the "Champagne of Ceylon Teas", Nuwara Eliya produces the highest elevation tea on the island.
- Flavor Profile: Delicate, floral, with subtle mint and green apple notes.
- Liquor Shade: Pale golden yellow, translucent and bright.
- Best Season: First flush quality period during January to March.
2. Dimbula (High Grown: 1,250m - 1,650m)
One of the most famous tea regions, nestled in the western slopes of the central hills.
- Flavor Profile: Crisp, full-bodied, refreshingly astringent with a bright citrus fragrance.
- Liquor Shade: Golden-orange with a reddish tint.
- Best Season: Western quality season from January to March.
3. Uva (Medium to High Grown: 1,000m - 1,600m)
Subjected to the fierce dry winds of the Cachar monsoon.
- Flavor Profile: Exotic, pungent, with distinct menthol and wintergreen aromas.
- Liquor Shade: Deep coppery red.
- Best Season: Eastern quality season from July to September.
4. Uda Pussellawa (High Grown: 1,500m - 1,800m)
Situated close to Nuwara Eliya, benefiting from dual monsoon rains.
- Flavor Profile: Medium-bodied, tangy, refreshing with rose floral undertones.
- Liquor Shade: Bright pinkish-red liquor.
5. Kandy (Medium Grown: 600m - 1,200m)
The historical birthplace of Ceylon Tea, surrounding the ancient royal capital.
- Flavor Profile: Rich, malty, robust, and copper-toned. Excellent with milk or iced.
- Liquor Shade: Deep reddish-brown.
6. Ruhuna (Low Grown: Sea level to 600m)
Located in the southern coastal hinterland with rich tropical soil.
- Flavor Profile: Intensely sweet, heavy-bodied, malty with chocolate and caramel undertones.
- Liquor Shade: Dark mahogany red.
7. Sabaragamuwa (Low Grown: Sea level to 800m)
Surrounding Sri Lanka's largest rain forest, Sinharaja.
- Flavor Profile: Smooth, sweet, full-bodied with hints of honey and ripe berries.
- Liquor Shade: Dark reddish-brown with high gloss.
