The story of Ceylon tea began in 1867 when Scottish pioneer James Taylor planted 19 acres of tea at the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy. The Beginnings of Ceylon Tea & James Taylor's Legacy

150+ Years of Tea Heritage

In 1867, Scottish pioneer James Taylor carved out 19 acres of forest at the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy to plant Sri Lanka's first commercial tea crop. Shortly after, a devastating fungal disease known as coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix) wiped out the island's booming coffee industry. Looking for a solution, desperate planters turned to Taylor's successful tea experiment.

Taylor didn't just plant tea; he revolutionized how it was made. By 1872, he had built a fully operational tea factory at Loolecondera, inventing early tea-rolling machinery and officially launching the commercial sale of Ceylon tea to the world.

James Taylor & Loolecondera

Taylor established the blueprint for the entire industry, developing the first processing techniques and rolling machines still echoed in factories today.

From Coffee to Tea

The rapid collapse of the coffee industry in the 1870s forced planters to adapt, creating an agricultural boom that made tea Sri Lanka's greatest export.
