Every cup of pure Ceylon Tea starts with one special plant: Camellia sinensis. To keep the quality high, the Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka (TRI) develops special tea plant types for Sri Lanka's different climates and acidic soils. These plants contain natural compounds such as catechins and amino acids that help create the special taste of Ceylon tea.
Tea Plant Types & Leaf Genetics
All true tea comes from an evergreen plant called Camellia sinensis. In Sri Lanka, the Tea Research Institute (TRI) has spent many years developing special varieties of this plant so they can grow well in different parts of Sri Lanka, handle dry weather, and produce better flavors.
The traditional sinensis type has small leaves and grows well in cool mountain areas. It is valued for making light, bright, and floral teas that are famous in Sri Lanka's high areas.
The Assamica type has much larger leaves and grows well in warm, humid weather. It is widely used in Sri Lanka's low-grown areas to make strong, full-bodied, dark tea.

Fresh tea leaves contain antioxidants called catechins, such as EGCG. During factory processing, oxygen changes these into theaflavins and thearubigins. These compounds give black tea its bright color and fresh taste.

Soil & Growing Conditions
