Executive Overview

Sri Lanka is the undisputed master of traditional tea making. Today, nearly 90% of all Ceylon tea is crafted using the Traditional manufacturing process. While the complete end-to-end journey includes harvesting in the fields and final export packing, this page focuses strictly on The Factory Core: the 5 artisanal steps inside the factory walls that transform a green leaf into world-famous black tea.

The Art & Science of Ceylon Traditional Tea Making

Careful Leaf Handling

Traditional tea production is a time-honored craft in Sri Lanka. It relies on the tea maker's senses and strict climate control to transform fresh green leaves into premium black tea. By gently rolling rather than tearing the leaf, the traditional method preserves the essential oils that give Ceylon tea its vibrant, layered flavors.

Flavour & Aroma Development

Gentle rolling twists the leaves and starts the oxidation process. The tea maker carefully adjusts the pressure to bring out the perfect balance of flavor and aroma.

Premium Traditional Grades

This traditional method produces famous whole-leaf and broken-leaf grades, such as Orange Pekoe (OP), BOP, and FBOP, known for their beautiful appearance and clean taste.

The Factory Core: 5 Stages of Traditional Tea Making

While the complete tea journey starts in the field and ends with export packing, these 5 stages represent The Factory Core—the traditional steps that transform fresh tea leaves inside the factory.

01About 18–24 Hours

Trough Withering

Fresh tea leaves are spread out on large mesh troughs with fans blowing underneath. This gently removes excess moisture over 18 to 24 hours, making the crisp leaves soft and pliable for rolling.

02Varies by Leaf & Process

Leaf Rolling

The soft leaves are placed into traditional brass rolling machines. The machines press and twist the leaves, breaking the cell walls to release the natural juices and oils without shredding the leaf.

Stage 02 of 05
03About 20 Mins–5 Hours

Aeration (Oxidation)

The rolled leaves are spread on cool tables to react with the oxygen in the air. Over a few hours, they naturally turn from green to a deep coppery brown, developing the classic black tea flavor and aroma.

Stage 03 of 05
04Controlled Hot-Air Firing

Hot-Air Drying

To lock in the flavor and stop the oxidation process, the leaves are passed through hot-air dryers (around 99–104°C). This removes almost all remaining moisture, creating stable, dry black tea.

Mechanical Grading

Finally, vibrating mechanical sieves sort the finished tea into different sizes (grades). Whole leaves form premium OP grades, while broken pieces form robust BOP grades.

Gentle Leaf Rolling & Leaf Sifting

1. Traditional Leaf Rolling

Once withered, the leaves enter circular brass rolling tables. The motion gently twists the leaves to release their natural juices and begin oxidation without breaking their whole structure.

2. Sifting & Separating Leaves

The rolled leaf mass (called dhool) is gently sifted to separate fine leaves from larger ones. The larger leaves are rolled again to make sure every leaf oxidizes evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Traditional tea process is the traditional, artisanal method used to craft premium Ceylon black tea. While the complete end-to-end journey includes harvesting and packing, the 'factory core' consists of 5 inside-factory steps: withering to remove moisture, gentle rolling, oxidation (fermentation), hot-air drying, and grading by size.
